The sheer number of main and secondary characters complicated the establishing setting rendering those new names almost completely irrelevant to the audience even though they were some of the most instrumental roles in this movie (e.g. There was so much competition for screen time among these huge names that there didn’t seem to be enough time for anyone. Besides the previously seen cast of First Class like James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawerence and Nicholas Hoult and the usual series, classic X-Men Hugh Jackman, Patrick Steward, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, there were numerous tertiary characters played with reputable actors and actresses like Lan Bing Bing, Peter Dinklage (or Tyrion for GoT fans), Ellen Page and even a cameo by Evan Peters (American Horror Story heart throb). The world has already seen what devastating things mutants can do and has set the path for the “darker future”, simply not killing Dr Trask hardly seems like it’s going to change much and prevent them from trying to eliminate the mutants again like we have seen throughout the X-Men franchise.Īnother thing that bothered me throughout the movie was how it was packed full of big stars that did not seem to serve much purpose but for publicity. However, the ending of the movie hardly seems satisfactory. For this time travel film, it is hard to expect what would happen next and how it affects the apocalyptic future, thus keeping you at the edge of your seat. Now I really want to watch Assassin’s Creed (2015) though! He kinda reminds me of Tom Hiddleston as Loki- the villain you can’t hate. Though his actions speaks volumes about Magneto’s character, Michael’s performance fell short that misguided ruthless killer that Magneto becomes (probably because he’s just too charming to hate). It is barely believable that the young handsome Michael Fassbender could be that evil after his midair lecture to Charles about saving the mutants. There I was thinking Peter’s character Dr Bolivar Trask was the main villain when they throw you a curve ball back to the old clichè. I have not read the comics but plotting Magneto as the main villain hardly seems desirable and fresh considering the number of times the X-Men have fought with him. To be honest while not as epic as some of the past X-Men movies with a more familiar and classic cast, it was surprisingly captivating with its fast and unexpected plot developments except until Magneto started do his diabolical “mutants take over the world” shit again, which I’m surely everyone remembers from all the past X Men movies. I am not a superhero movie kind of person, but after Hugh Jackman and Peter Dinklage‘s visit to Singapore for the premiere I was excited to watch the film. Today I caught the extensively publicized X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), the 7th movie in the nostalgic X-Men series that most of us 90s kids grew up with.
